Prophet David Mbewe joins presidential race
Liberation for Economic Freedom Party (LEFP) presidential candidate David Mbewe yesterday joined the September 16 2025 General Election by submitting his nomination papers to Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
During the ceremony at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe, he unveiled Edward Kambanje as his running mate.

In a passionate address, the Machinga-based prophet pledged to eradicate poverty and create jobs for thousands of young people.
“During my tenure, I will create a million jobs and ensure the eradication of poverty in this country,” he declared.
Mbewe stressed the urgent need to tackle unemployment, particularly among the youth, which remains a major challenge in Malawi.
After receiving the papers, MEC chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja confirmed Mbewe as a successful applicant eligible to contest in the presidential race.
“I can confirm that the aspiring candidate fulfilled all the requirements set by MEC and is, therefore, eligible to contest for the presidency,” she said, underscoring the importance of a transparent electoral process.
However, Mtalimanja, a judge of the High Court of Malawi, cautioned political parties against inciting violence during and after the campaign period, urging them to adhere to MEC protocols.
MEC is expected to conclude the nomination process for presidential aspirants by 4pm today.
